our St Heliers Centre
In 1986, on the magical Maskell Street in St Heliers, Bear Park began. As the original Bear Park centre, we carry our history with pride and our future with excitement. Spread across two characterful homes, our environments have welcomed generations of St Heliers families.

Shaded outdoor areas, mature trees and well-established gardens invite children to explore, create and imagine every day. The Bear Park mission to create a home away from home is very much alive at St Heliers, where our committed teaching team, positive community connections and loyal families serve as an inspiration for the entire Bear Park network.

Our ethos
A Place of Belonging

As the original Bear Park centre, we are deeply proud of our history and committed to fostering a sense of belonging in every child, every family and every member of the wider St Heliers community. With our committed and passionate teaching team, our positive connections with the wider community and the loyalty of our Bear Park families, our St Heliers centres serve as an inspiration for many other Bear Park locations.

Our commitment
A Place of Belonging

We are proud of our heritage and aim to foster a sense of belonging in every child, every family and every member of the wider St Heliers community.

Our Children

We foster a strong sense of belonging with our children, thus providing them with a solid foundation for learning. In both our infant-toddler centre and preschool, children are supported to feel secure, connected and proud to be part of the Bear Park St Heliers community.

Our Teachers

At the heart of Bear Park St Heliers, our devoted and long-standing team of teachers believe in building a deep sense of connection with children and their whānau, fostering a life-long passion for learning.

Our Environment

We take pride in our comforting 'home away from home' environment where children feel valued, and have a strong sense of belonging. Our expansive and beautiful gardens create a sense of wonder, and endless possibilities, allowing children the space to explore and discover.

Our Focus
The Foundation of Our Practice

At Bear Park St Heliers, we pride ourselves on giving every child a true home away from home. This is supported through both of our centres being created within warm, modified residential homes on Maskell Street.

Our Learning Spaces

The Nursery teaching team promotes a warm and nurturing environment for young minds to learn and grow. Through fostering small group situations, children are able to build a sense of identity while learning alongside others. We currently have four full-time teaching staff in the Nursery, all passionate about creating valuable learning experiences for young children. Each teacher brings a unique background and set of skills to share alongside the children and teaching team.

The Preschool team strongly values nurturing and respectful partnerships with the children and their families. Our vision is for our learning environments to offer children the time and space to realise and share their ideas. We enjoy working alongside the children as they embark on new and exciting discoveries, celebrated through various forums for contributions and investigations. We aspire to ensure all children's unique identities and competencies are fostered, so they continue to enjoy a growing sense of autonomy.

FAQs

Where is the St Heliers centre located?

Bear Park St Heliers is at 114-116 Maskell Street, St Heliers, Auckland 1071. St Heliers village shops and St Heliers School are a 5 minute walk, and St Heliers Beach is a 3 minute drive. A well-established choice for families in the eastern bays. Open Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6.00pm. Nearby suburbs: Glendowie, Kohimarama, Meadowbank, Point England.

What is the ratio of teachers to children?

At Bear Park St Heliers, our kaiako-to-child ratios are kept generous so every tamariki is genuinely known, not just supervised. Small groups build security, and secure children learn better. We maintain ratios that go beyond licensing requirements, and in our youngest rooms the environment is particularly intimate and responsive.

How qualified and experienced are your childcare staff?

Our kaiako at Bear Park St Heliers come with a range of experience and credentials. At least 80% hold a recognised ECE or Primary teaching qualification at NZQA Level 7 or above, with Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand registration. Those working towards their qualification do so while working in the centre, gaining real experience alongside their studies. All teaching staff, at every stage of their career, are supported by Bear Park's Curriculum and Operations team.

What ages does Bear Park St Heliers accept?

Bear Park St Heliers welcomes children from 3 months to 5 years. From pēpi through to preschool, your child can grow with us and build secure bonds with their kaiako over time.

What are your fees and do you accept childcare subsidies?

For fee information, please contact Bear Park St Heliers directly. We're also part of the Government's 20 Hours ECE funding scheme for eligible three- and four-year-olds.
